So maybe you’ve never prayer to God before in your life, or maybe you prayed those
“Our Father’s” or those “Hail Mary’s”, or maybe you pray all the time, whatever the
case, lets jump right in and let’s find out what prayer is all about.
I love the quote by Martin Luther that says “As it is the business of tailors to mend
clothes… so it is the business of Christians to pray.”
Because I think so many people think that Christianity is all about behavior modification,
and yes God will do that, but Christianity is about who I now belong to.
When I married Ronnie, I became a Faisst because I now belong to him, and the same goes with
Jesus, we are now a quote, unquote Christian because we belong to Jesus and that is why
prayer is so important.
Prayer is simply talking to God.
We always say, Christianity is not about religion, it is about a relationship with a Person.
So in prayer, we take our words, our thoughts, and our affections and we direct it towards Him.
Prayer is simply a conversation with God.
And even if you’re not a Christian, God wants to hear from you, so if you lift your
voice to Him in faith, He will hear you.
Jesus modeled this in His life, and we can follow Him as we talk to the Father.
A lot of times, we think of prayer as a means to an end, like Jesus is our spiritual genie
in the bottle and we come to Him with this wishlist of all the things we want Him to
do for us, but actually, the main point of prayer isn’t us getting what we want.
He isn’t just the means to our end.
HE actually is the end.
Encountering God and growing in relationship with Him actually is the greatest thing about prayer.
Prayer is not just a one-way conversation.
It is actually a dialogue.
That is why we started our entire Youtube channel by teaching you guys about the Bible,
because prayer actually starts with God!
He started the story and the Bible is living, it is active and God wants to speak to you
about who He is, who you are to Him, and what He still plans to do.
But prayer isn’t actually only about knowing Him or encountering Him, it is actually how
we partner with Him in what He wants to do, in our lives and in the lives of others.
That is why it is important to pray HIS will, not ours, and we do that by finding out what
He wants to do and what He is like in the Bible.
Our weak little prayers actually shift things in our life and in the world all because of prayer.
So lets show you a few verses that speak of this.
James 4:2 says, “You do not have, because you do not ask.”
Phil 4:6 says, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
And 2 Chron 7:14 says, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and
pray… then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
And lets break this down because there actually four different types of prayer.
There is devotional prayer, which is growing in our relationship with Him.
There is intercession, praying on behalf of others.
There is supplication, asking God to do things in our own life.
Then there is worship, which is simply declaring to God who He is.
We will break each one of these down in more detail as we continue on in this prayer series,
so make sure you keep watching.
Most people think of prayer as a duty.
Something they have to do to keep God from being mad.
Or something they have to do to just check the box, but prayer is not a duty.
And it does not have to be a duty.
It can actually be a delight!
If you can start thinking of it as something you are meant to enjoy and not have to endure,
it will make prayer so much easier.
So prayer really is that simple.
It is you talking to God.
And your little, weak words, even if its just 30 seconds, or if it doesn’t sound great,
they matter to God.
Your small prayers not only impact your own life and the life of others, they actually
move God’s heart and He loves to hear you pray.
Acts 10:4, speaking to Cornelius says “Your prayers.. have ascended as a memorial before God.”
Your prayers are precious to God and they will be remembered by Him forever.
Having a life of prayer can radically transform you and is definitely something you want to
give your life to.
