Live Streaming your Podcast

nine eight seven six five four three two

one

hello everybody welcome to stream geeks

live what's going on geeks thank you for

joining us today we're so happy you're

here make sure you're saying hi in the

chat today we are talking about why

we're really doubling down on our

podcasts we just built a brand new

podcasting studio then we're going to

take you into and show you why we think

it's so important we believe in it for

our business we had a couple goals to

set up for our new podcasting studio one

is wanted to create incredibly high

quality audio recordings we wanted this

podcasting studio to be incredibly easy

to use and set and forget now we're

gonna go over some of the settings that

we've done and obviously tuning your

digital audio mixer and using VST 3

plugins and setting all of that up

incredibly increases the quality of your

audio recordings so yes there is some

set up but we want to eliminate

post-production if at all possible or at

least incredibly minimalize the

post-production process so that we can

pump out great content and include it as

part of our post show podcast as well

now we also want to be able to

accommodate remote guests and we also

want the ability to be able to

livestream as we're doing now but in a

podcast for max we think that's really

got some legs as far as marketing is

concerned now the big picture layout is

that we have right now we are in our

broadcast studio our main PC computer

with 8 cameras connected but it's also

connected with the new tech NDI to a

producer kit that we have in the front

of our room for smaller interviews and

it's also connected to our podcasting

studio so everything is connected and we

can leave this studio right here walk

about 150 feet to our podcasting studio

on the same live stream with zero

interruption and share videos and audio

sources all over our local area network

that's what makes this next level we're

going to give you a behind-the-scenes

tour so you're going to get a chance to

look at what it took to

set all of this up today plus you're

gonna get to hear these microphones that

we've really spent a lot of time tuning

the tech setup includes four microphones

we went all out and got the shore sm7

B's which is what is used in

professional radio and broadcast in fact

I saw it on the Joe Rogan show so I said

that's what they're using in the

professional world he livestreams his

show and gets way more live viewers and

viewers online on YouTube and Facebook

than he does from his podcast even

though his podcasts a big deal that's

one of the main reasons why we're

looking into this we're going to show

you some incredibly helpful VST 3

plugins that will bring your audio to

really the professional level as

possible we're going to talk a little

bit about marketing strategy test and I

have been podcasting for just about a

year now

we were always using these DPA do you

find microphones nothing wrong with them

at all but it's incredible how far we've

come and I just love the podcasting feel

and I think it sets a tone that that's

pretty cool well now that we've added a

visual aspect to our podcasts

we're playing to that for sure so let's

jump into this and talk a little bit

about our thoughts behind adding live

streaming to podcasting and if you have

a podcast if you've thought about doing

a podcast then you may have already

thought about adding live streaming and

video to your podcast let's see what

happens Mike when I go like this all

right let's just do that that's just a

small version of it that's fine

so live streaming your podcast what does

this a test well there's a couple quick

statistics that I wanted to share with

you guys if you're thinking what's so

cool and good about podcast this dot

says us podcast listeners typically earn

on average $10,000 more than the average

American I don't know what that says but

it makes me want to listen to some

podcasts yeah all right I should be

looking at some more podcasts I'll say

that um you know they have access to a

smartphone they're trying to enrich

their lives and learn something and I

think that it's something that a lot of

people are really starting to to

more and more a hundred and twelve

million Americans have listened to the

podcast up 11% and these are slightly

old numbers in fact the numbers they

keep going up they're staggering 85% of

listeners listen to all or most of a

podcast you take that and you consider

that against what Facebook numbers are I

would say 95% of Facebook what video

views are three seconds or less yep

so incredible this is a captive audience

and this these are people that are

seriously interested and really

considering the content that you have so

creating high quality audio is

incredibly important but those listens

that you get are incredibly valuable

it looks like 42 million Americans

listen to podcast weekly five times more

than go to the movies this is more

accessible and obviously cheaper because

it's free to listen to most podcasts now

here is an example of our workflow just

showing the potential audience that you

may be missing if you are not podcasting

so we usually stream to both Facebook

and YouTube and that's how we've thrown

most of our audience and we really enjoy

that we're doing that now

but if you're not recording your put

your audio for podcast format and you're

missing out on SoundCloud iTunes

stitcher radio potentially having an

entire podcast your intent entire blog

related to the podcast and it's a it's I

would say 10 to 20 percent boost in your

audience so who wouldn't want to do that

yeah there's definitely an untapped

audience there in the podcast listening

world that you can access possibly

transfer them over to your live show and

vice versa and the good news is those of

you watching us or most likely streamers

you already have a lot of equipment you

know well some of the time you already

have a lot of the equipment that it

takes to start a podcast even if it's

not the best quality you have a lot if

your disposal as a streamer already now

here's an example of some monthly

podcast listeners you can see that the

demographics actually skew to that

difficult to reach 25 to 54 market and

that is where people have dollars to

Bend these are the the high earners of

our world they are likely employed and

these are people that are difficult to

reach with other types of advertising so

podcasts really are starting to become

that was by year each of those colors

was C 2013 starts at the dark blue mhm

and that's year by year so you can see

the quick progression of the listeners

within each age group actually so hi hi

big picture here we talked about how our

main studio is connected to our producer

kit which is connected to our podcast so

we can seamlessly transition between a

live stream to a podcast and you're

going to see that today in just a few

minutes so our main studio is going to

be streaming to YouTube and Facebook

eventually twitch for our post show via

video our podcasting studio is simply

doing the podcasting so all the audio is

available over the new tech nd I brought

into our live stream over the local area

network and there's there's one camera

as well plugged into that computer

our producer kit is actually bringing in

two additional cameras that give us some

nice video angles so that we can produce

a really good podcast you guys have seen

this studio this is kind of the way our

main broadcast studio set up but when

we're talking about podcasting it's

quite different and as you know we've

got four microphones here and I just

want to briefly explain the mix - that

we have setup so we've got four headsets

and four microphones now headset number

one gets a specific mix and we're using

a digital audio mixer to use auxiliary

audio outputs to create unique mixes for

each headset so headset number one will

get microphone two microphone three

microphone four and actually audio audio

effects that we're triggering from an X

Keys using V mix into headset one but it

does not get headset ones microphone

back that's essentially what a mix - is

I think most of our audience understand

that so I'm not gonna go to my steamers

can definitely understand the feeling

when you can hear yourself talking in

your headphones I briefly oh my god

and everyone has had it haven't ya I've

really wanted to talk about EQ in a

podcast because I was actually googling

it and there's really difficult to find

good information about EQ in a podcast

what is an EQ well it essentially is the

ability to cut off certain frequencies

coming from your microphones in order to

optimize what are we looking for here

the human voice male voice versus female

voice are significantly different

actually the male voice is generally in

between 100 and 500 Hertz with the body

of that voice isn't the female voice is

in the 200 to almost 1100 frame range so

they're actually quite different and you

do need to think about them differently

one of the couple things that we're

going to do to EQ our podcast the

easiest thing and the best place to

start and we've seen like the best

simple results is to simply do what's

called a high pass and a low pass filter

the high pass filter what it does is

essentially gives a pass to everything

above the frequency that you have

selected and then you can choose like an

arc for what is actually being cut off

now the human voice since we're talking

about podcasting cuts off at about 80

Hertz so anything below 80 Hertz we

don't care about we don't need it it's

essentially low humming it may be maybe

a bus going outside the window things

like that we can cut all of that out in

a similar sense we can do a high-pass

filter

here's where you can get rid of really

high buzzes from like computers fans

I've been stylized how much that will do

sound masking well sound masking

actually is actually built to mask the

sound of the human voice so it actually

fills up the frequencies that we

actually want to use that masking is

very bad for podcasting if you have it

on turn it off Czar's off ours is off is

off now when your EQ infer the human

voice I have a couple tips for you that

we can that you can use and tip number

one is to cut 100 to 300 Hertz to add a

little clarity you can cut 300 to 400

Hertz to hit the the sound of voices if

it sounds a little muddy and then you

can boost 2 to 6,000 Hertz

to improve clarity what does that look

like well here you can see we're doing a

high-pass filter here we're cutting a

little bit in the 200 and 300 we're

boosting a little bit in the 2000 6000

and then another high-pass filter here

now what we're going to suggest and what

we're playing around with and testing

for our podcast is doing very minimal

amount of EQ on our digital audio mixer

and then leveraging what's called a BST

3 plug-in to do what no human could even

do which is real-time

audio processing of the mixes coming in

and actually doing combinations of

compression gating limiting noise

suppression and combining them into

really easy tools specific for vocals a

vocal writing of inputs and something

called a de-esser we'll talk a little

bit about these tools but they're

incredible especially if you're not an

audio engineer really good stuff we'll

talk about that but what a couple of the

basic things we're doing on our digital

audio mixer one is a noise gate and

essentially what that does is it's a

gate for the microphones it mutes the

microphones until they reach a certain

threshold and you can see here that we

generally are looking at something in

the neighborhood of maybe negative 5

maybe negative 10 decimal levels

anything below that it's just gonna be

muted because it might be somebody

whispering it might be some typing or

stuff like that just mute it all if

someone's not physically speaking

directly into that microphone then it's

just muted and there's a couple

different options we can do an attack

and and I think it's called a release

and the attack and release or how

quickly the gating turns on and turns

off really in milliseconds and that's uh

that's the noise gate the compressor is

the exact opposite so the noise gate is

muting at the lower level frequencies

the compressor is actually waiting for

the audio to hit a certain decimal level

so let's say zero decimal level that's

as high as we want it to go we can set

up a compressor or a limiter to

basically slowly reduce the audio at

once it goes you know over a certain

threshold to stop picking so we can

essentially stop peeking

with our digital audio mixer no reason

to have the audio peak before it even

gets into our video production software

mix - we talked about label everything

of course all your microphones all your

head simple but very helpful for us

especially when you're plugging

everything in this is going to be really

cool we'll show you guys this in a

presentation in the little now they're

one of those crossover products from

streaming to podcasting that a lot of

streamers have the ability to use and

know how to use and program and we have

a lot of fun using them to trigger

certain noise effects and intros and

outros and whatnot in our podcasts here

we go I'm going to play this ken says do

you see a difference in listening to a

recorded podcast compare if you're

streaming out a live audio feed does it

make sense the stream live audio um you

know streaming just audio if you're

already going the step of live stream

and here's our X Keys here I wanted to

kind of share that off and how that's

that's triggered and set up in the

background it's not enough time for a

full tutorial but if you're streaming

audio I don't see why you wouldn't

stream video as well just make sure

you're getting a high quality recording

to feed the iTunes the stitcher radio

the podcast outlets they currently to

this point do not accept live streams

they're really built for audio supported

content but what a lot of people don't

realize is that most podcasting systems

including iTunes which is the big one

out there accept video mm-hmm so you can

upload your video and we do that and it

kind of sets you apart from other

podcast and we're actually going to

invite you guys to join us for a podcast

recording at the end of the show ken has

a tip saying cutting low frequencies

also cuts most air conditioning systems

yes I cutting and gating is just it's

it's incredible what you can do and I

can't wait to walk over there and show

you guys all this stuff now from the VST

3 plug-in section of our presentation

I haven't fit everything in there but we

have two different ones that we

recommend waves comm has some of the

best VST 3 plugins you can purchase

individual plugins or you can purchase

bundles which saves you a bundle of

money there's two that I've been working

with

one is called Renaissance max bundle and

one is called the vocal bundle and

honestly I think the Renaissance max

bundle is actually better and just been

so happy with the performance of these

VST three plugins here let me see if I

can play a little clip of these here

here we go so here's all of our audio in

our podcasting computer here and you can

see in the plugins section that we can

actually add a host of plugins from

wavez because we purchased the whole

bundle and here's one that's called a

de-esser and it just does some really

advanced audio processing it comes with

plugins so that we can have male vocals

female vocals or sorry presets for the

plug-in and I mean what this is doing is

incredibly advanced it's doing noise

floors it's doing a queuing to specific

areas of your audio coming in and I mean

to do that kind of thing with a piece of

hardware would cost thousands of dollars

and these plugins are doing it in real

time so they're affecting the audio of

our live stream but also our podcast so

it's just it's incredible to me what

these VST plugins can do here's another

one that we use quite a lot this is

called the stereo box and this actually

boosts the bass and for a podcaster you

know a radio person oh my gosh Michael

sounds great with a boosted bass and

I've been tuning these I think you're

gonna be pretty surprised in fact I'm

thinking we run over there and do a

quick test choice show them what it's

like yeah we're about to start the

podcast at the end of the show right

yeah so let's let's run over there and

we're gonna jump right into this show

you guys the audio from our podcast and

before this episode is over conception

was almost over she doesn't get a quick

listen to how great it sounds

ready mm-hmm let's go all right here we

go I will bring the chat Oh can't leave

without my trusty I'm gonna bring my

laptop Joe enough is enough space or not

but I'm gonna bring it I'll leave it

[Music]

alright okay here we go da da da da da

no Donna okay how do we sound so tell me

really quick because last time the

output of our streaming software was

different is that setup that is time so

one of the things that we can do with

the new tech NDI that's pretty cool is

we can bring in the output of the live

stream to give us a there it is

a preview so you guys are looking at

test now and let's give a look over here

change this preset just a hair so what

we've got is we have the ability to do

say here alright that's our fine there

we go this is our wide shot and we've

got our close-up

so we can go wide uh here comes Mike

here it comes from I like we have to set

up Mike's shot a little better here

let's see oh no that's your pretty good

pretty good close-up there for you Mike

there you go give us some audio give us

that voice happy Monday everybody wants

to go made for radio give us some likes

and emojis for Michael's radio boys Tess

you should be playing with shown the

excuse gay Tirana is rarely ever used

for voices maybe we shouldn't get too

much David knows a lot more than we do

about the stuff thank you David for some

of the expertise that you've lent us we

had a little conversation one of the

things is hey I got the microphone

changed a little bit so these bars

aren't that horribly in the way they're

not that great either but my laptop

we're still testing around here so you

know experiment well the last show that

we you know

least this whole setup that was about an

hour after we had finished setting it up

yeah

so we're by no means you know finished

our management and adjustment period

with this whole system so boom close up

fortes high then they go back to a wide

shot how about you Mike you want to

close up yeah here we go

boom close up for Mike okay I got a move

for close up a little bit here we go

there we go

so go out trying to use the magic of two

cameras with one of them being a PTZ

giving us a quite a few shots without

you know panning off camera if you will

and can we get a couple audio effects

guys

[Music]

there's that X Keys we were talking

about so tell us guys how do we sound do

we sound okay or the microphones alright

what do you guys think let us know in

the chat and if you have any questions

about what we talked about today please

offer them to us because we're here to

hang out I listen to a little bit in the

other studio sound okay yes I'm pretty

good oh I don't feel like we can boost

it a little bit you need to speak

directly into that mic not across the

top you you should sound muddy now okay

so oh there you go see you too we're

doing it right I'm doing it wrong

thank you God David can you please come

over here from California and teach us

how to do this ha ha I'm sorry what were

you doing you were not I had it kind of

like that oh hi Dan into the mic hi Dan

alright now I'm gonna go over to the

other studio and I am going to cut this

run the post show okay we did pick up

some surprises yeah yeah so that's

something that we can I don't know if I

card I haven't eq'd every single mic yet

oh yeah I'm gonna EQ them and hopefully

that will help a little bit we just got

it

Paul sounded overprocess test is much

better than stole a mic is a bit low

Mike yeah Mike they're saying this thing

he's not a lot better oh yeah I have to

work on the processing on the VST threes

because I know Dan sangmi sound clear

alright good we're going to podcast mode

I'm gonna go switch us to twitch I'll

see you guys I'll be right back make the

switch boss I will put the twitch TV

link to watch our show on twitch in the

chat so you can join us for the POE show

where we are going to start the podcast

for today and give you guys a little

shouldn't say look why should say look

because this is still a visual medium

look into what our podcast recording

looks like

and for those of you who haven't

followed us on podcasting platforms like

pod beans SoundCloud and iTunes go find

us we're at stream geeks everywhere

because we love support especially from

our live viewers come over and hang all

right so twitch.tv slash esky is where

we are going to send you you guys should

know the deal yeah you guys are

professionals know where to find us on

Twitch and if you don't know if you new

will welcome

find us at twitch / s geeks
